ALF POWELL
Full Name: Alfred Charles Henry Powell
Born: 14 April 1910
Came from: Bolton Wanderers Went to: Leeds United
First game: 02 September 1935 Last game: 05 October 1935
Appearances: 2 (2/0) Goals: 0
Powell, a Welsh outside-left, had a brief flirtation with the Football League. He was born in Pontnewynydd, a predominantly working-class community near Pontypool in Monmouthshire, south Wales. Pontypool was the registration district recorded on his birth certificate. He is sometimes incorrectly cited as having been born in Pontnewydd, a separate place near Cwmbran with a slightly different spelling.
He began his career with his home town club, Pontnewynydd, a strong side in the Monmouthshire Senior League. A rich vein of form, during which he scored 18 goals in nine games, earned him a trial with top-flight Bolton Wanderers in December 1933.
Powell impressed sufficiently at Burnden Park to earn a professional contract, signing for Wanderers in 1934. However, he was unable to break into the first team and moved to Argyle in the summer of 1935 under Bob Jack.
He made four appearances and scored once for the reserves in the Southern League (Western Section), as well as playing 12 times and scoring five goals in the Southern League (Central Section). He was also part of the team that won the Southern League Cup, in the final they beat Tonbridge Wells Rangers 7-0 at Home Park, and 5-2 in Kent to secure the trophy. Powell made two appearances in the competition.
At first-team level, he managed just two appearances early in the 1935-36 season. With further opportunities limited, he returned north within a year and eventually signed for Leeds United. As at Bolton, he was unable to establish himself in the first team. Records suggest that his two appearances for Argyle were also his only Football League outings.
Little is known about his later life. He returned to his native south Wales and died in the first quarter of 1980, with his death registered in the Pontypool district, the same registration district as his birth. He was 69.
