Peacock began his career with his hometown club, Middlesbrough, where he formed a tremendous goalscoring partnership with Brian Clough. Despite being the junior partner in the strikeforce he scored 125 goals in just over 200 appearances during his nine years with the club. An England youth international player, he progressed to become a full international and made his debut against Argentina in the 1962 World Cup. In 1964 he joined Leeds United but a series of knee injuries limited his appearances for the club, although he did help them secure promotion to the First Division in his first season at Elland Road. In 1965 he was recalled to the England squad and looked set to play a part in the World Cup Finals, but injury again intervened and his goalscoring performance against Northern Ireland in the Home Championship proved to be the last of his six caps. Moving on to Home Park in 1967 he could only manage a dozen games before further knee problems forced his retirment.
