A Plymouth-born right-back who came through the youth ranks at the club, he was given his first team debut by David Kemp.
Spending two seasons as a first team player whilst Argyle were in Division Two, he featured 22 times for the club and played under both Kemp and then Peter Shilton.
His last appearance for the club was the do-or-die final-day 3-1 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers in 1991-92, which relegated the club. Arguably, by then his confidence was in tatters after failing to to meet the exacting standards set by new player-manager Shilton. At the close of the season, the then 19-year-old was offered as a makeweight in a player-plus-cash deal that brought Paul Dalton to Home Park, and thus became a Hartlepool United player in June 1992. Dalton's fee was £250,000, Cross being valued at £75,000 for his part in in the move, with Hartlepool receiving Cross plus the cash difference, for the Dalton deal.
He went on to spend two seasons at Victoria Park and made 50 appearances for Pools. In 1993 he then joined Bury in the December of that year. He spent three years with the Shakers, which were heavily disrupted by injuries, restricting him to 42 appearances.
Cross the then elected to return to Devon. Seeking to remain in the game, he spent a fortnight with Exeter City, playing in their pre-season friendlies Portsmouth and Chelsea in 1996 ahead of the 1996-97 season. However no deal followed and he briefly played for Sligo Rovers in the Republic of Ireland, ahead of spells on the local non-league circuit with Dorchester Town, Weymouth, Weston-super-Mare and Bodmin Town.
Having retired from the game and fully settled back in his home city, he re-trained as an electrician and August 2015, he launched his own local business called RC Electrical.
