BRENDAN WIREDU
Full Name: Brendan Nana Akwasi Sarpong Wiredu
Born: 07 November 1999
Came from: Fleetwood Town Went to: Salford City
First game: 02 August 2025 Last game: 15 August 2026
Appearances: 43 (26/17) Goals: 4
Born in Tower Hamlets, London, and of Ghanaian descent, Wiredu arrived at Home Park having played as a midfielder, wing-back and full-back.
He started his career as a youth with Charlton Athletic, making his debut in an Football League Trophy defeat to Milton Keynes Dons in August 2018. In May 2019, his contract was extended until 2021.
In February 2019, he joined ambitious National League side Bromley on loan until the end of the season, making 11 appearances for the club. He was later loaned out again, this time to League Two side Colchester United until January 2020, where he made a further 11 appearances.
Having initially returned to Charlton, he was allowed to leave just as the January transfer window closed, returning to Colchester United on a permanent basis. In total he had made six appearances for Charlton in various cup competitions but had not made a league appearance.
On his return to Essex, he scored his first professional goal in a 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers in March 2021 and, in July 2021, signed a two-year contract extension. He added a further 65 appearances and scored twice across two League Two seasons.
In June 2022, Wiredu moved north and up a division to join League One Fleetwood Town on a three-year deal. He spent two seasons with the club in League One before they returned to League Two and was also made captain, playing 123 times and scoring seven goals for the Cod Army.
Following Argyle's own relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2024-25 season and the mass exodus that followed, Wiredu was signed by new Argyle manager Tom Cleverley as the club's seventh summer signing at the start of June 2025. Argyle reportedly beat other League One and Championship clubs to Wiredu's signature and, although the fee was undisclosed, it was rumoured to be £300,000. He signed a three-year deal ahead of the club's return to League One.
He suffered a baptism of fire in an opening-day home defeat against Barnsley in August 2025, conceding an early own goal, making a mistake for the visitors' second before being substituted at half-time. The wave of negativity on social media was, however, unwarranted, and he was supported by the club, which issued an official statement condemning such abuse. Having stabilised things somewhat, he then received a second yellow card for simulation and was sent off in an away game at Lincoln City later in August, in just his fourth game for the club.
Unperturbed, he established himself in the side, playing 43 games as a Pilgrim, including 26 starts, and scoring four goals, mainly in his favoured midfield role. During his time at the club, he was renowned as a model professional and provided inspiration by starting the Brendan Wiredu Foundation, which aims to use sport for positive societal change.
With the signing of Harvey White in the summer and the return to fitness of other players, there was a perception that Wiredu had fallen down the pecking order, despite his usefulness as a utility player capable of covering several positions.
Having come on as a substitute in another opening-day home defeat at the start of the next season, against Stockport County in August 2026, it was perhaps to the surprise and disappointment of the fanbase that he was allowed to leave Home Park and join League Two side Salford City for an undisclosed fee on a 'multi-year deal'.
