Following the Second World War, Plymouth Argyle resumed conventional League football in the 1945-46 season, albeit in the unconventional form of the Football League South. However, the club's senior players took part in a cup competition, the Football League West Cup, in the final two months of the 1944-45 campaign. There is more in Greens on Screen's History, chapter 16, about Argyle's post-war re-establishment and first senior competition, here.
Argyle took part in nine games in this competition, but further facts are very hard to find, except for those revealed in short match reports in the Western Morning News. Foster was one of 12 known players whose only appearances for the club were in Football League West Cup matches.
Born in Coalville, Leicestershire, Foster made his debut for Leicester City in February 1941, having just joined the club from local side Western Athletic. He travelled south a few days later to join the Royal Navy, and first appeared in green in Newquay in November 1944 when Argyle played a combined Newquay-RAF side in a fundraising match. He played in two Football League West Cup matches in the first week of April 1945, losing each time to Bath City, before returning to Leicester after demobilisation. Still only 25, he appeared nine times for the Foxes in the 1945-46 Football League South season, his only other games in senior football.
