The younger brother of former Pilgrim Ben Purrington and nephew of England rugby international and World Cup winner Richard Hill, Tom was first spotted playing for West Exe Youth under-9s at the age of eight. He joined Argyle’s Centre of Excellence in Exeter before progressing into the club’s academy a year later, spending the next eight years following in his brother’s footsteps.
Purrington made his first-team debut in the final year of his apprenticeship, coming on as an 81st-minute substitute in Argyle’s 2-0 defeat at Newport County in November 2018. A regular in the club’s Central League and Premier League Cup sides that season, he earned a professional contract in June 2019.
Two months later, he joined fellow midfielder Cameron Sangster in signing on loan for Dorchester Town, playing in the Southern League South Division (tier seven) until the coronavirus pandemic halted the season in March 2020. He made 20 appearances and scored three goals before being released by Argyle at the end of the curtailed season.
In September 2020, Purrington signed for National League side Bromley after impressing on trial, but made only two appearances for the club. He returned to Dorchester Town in June 2021, adding a further 39 appearances and four goals to his record.
A move to fellow Southern League Premier Division South club Tiverton Town followed for the 2022-23 season. In 2023-24, he returned to Plymouth to sign for Plymouth Parkway, making 45 appearances and scoring four goals in a successful campaign at Bolitho Park. He then joined league rivals Taunton Town, who had recently been relegated from the National League South following a season blighted by financial difficulties and a winding-up petition from HMRC.
After making 70 appearances and scoring six goals for Taunton over almost two seasons, he then opted to return to Dorchester Town for a third spell in the summer of 2026, ahead of the 2026-27 season.
