JAMILLE MATT
Full Name: Jamille Antonio Matt
Born: 20 October 1989
Came from: Stevenage Went to: Stevenage
First game: 12 March 2016 Last game: 30 May 2016
Appearances: 14 (12/2) Goals: 7
Home Park welcomed the Jamaican-born, 6ft 1in forward as Argyle’s second loan signing in as many days, following Jordan Houghton’s arrival from Chelsea. Matt was brought in to bolster the strike-force after Ryan Brunt suffered a long-term injury.
Matt began his career with Sutton Coldfield Town before moving to Kidderminster Harriers in November 2010, initially on non-contract terms, following an earlier trial with the National League club. He spent two years at Aggborough, although visa and work permit issues interrupted his time there. His return of 22 goals in 62 games earned him a new 18-month contract in January 2013.
Later that month, Fleetwood Town broke their club-record transfer fee to sign him for £300,000. An ankle problem side-lined him for a month in November 2013, and he then missed the entire 2014-15 season through injury. Despite this, Fleetwood offered him a new contract in May 2015.
By the time he arrived at Argyle, he had made 37 starts and a further 26 substitute appearances for the Cod Army, scoring 16 goals. He had also gained League Two experience during a two-month loan at Stevenage, where he scored once in eight games before returning to Fleetwood in January 2016.
Although he made only 14 appearances in green, his seven goals proved important in Argyle’s play-off push. His tally included an impressive brace against Portsmouth, one goal an overhead kick, in a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park in the 2015-16 League Two play-off semi-final. Argyle ultimately progressed to Wembley.
His final appearance for the Pilgrims came in the disappointing play-off final in north London. Argyle made approaches to sign him permanently during the summer, but he eventually opted for a shorter move to neighbours Blackpool. He received a warm reception from the Home Park faithful when he appeared as a substitute for the Tangerines in March 2017.
He went on to make 39 appearances and scored three goals for Blackpool, but injury problems disrupted his time there. Finding it difficult to break into the first team at the start of the 2017-18 season, he joined League Two Grimsby Town on a season-long loan at the end of August 2017. He made 37 appearances and scored four goals for the Mariners before returning to Blackpool, who released him at the end of the season.
In June 2018, he joined Newport County on a two-year contract. He was part of the side that reached the League Two play-off final at Wembley in May 2019, where Newport narrowly lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers to a goal in the 119th minute. Released at the end of the 2019-20 season amid the club’s financial concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, he had made 98 appearances and scored 26 goals across his two seasons with County.
He then signed an initial one-year deal with Forest Green Rovers in July 2020. Having scored nine goals in 23 appearances, he exercised an option to extend his contract by a further year in December. In April 2021, he was nominated for the League Two Player of the Season award and was subsequently appointed club captain for the 2021-22 campaign. Across three seasons, he made 109 appearances and scored 39 goals for the Gloucestershire club.
In January 2023, he joined League Two side Walsall for an undisclosed fee, signing an 18-month contract. He later agreed a one-year extension in May 2024, having made 53 appearances and scored eight goals for the club. The new deal took him into his third season at Walsall in 2024-25.
Released by Walsall at the end of the 2025-26 season, having made a total of 140 appearances and having scored 23 goals, he joined Southern League Premier Division Central club Bromsgrove Sporting.
