Hammersmith-born Stuart was a wide-midfielder who turned professional with Charlton Athletic. Making his debut in 1984, he went on to make 107 appearances over five years for the London side, scoring 28 times. After he was deemed surplus to requirements at The Valley, Stuart moved to Home Park in November 1988 to join Ken Brown's side, spending two seasons in Green and producing a series of reliable and effective performances. Towards the end of his Home Park career, after Brown's departure, Stuart spent a month on loan at Ipswich Town in 1990, before transferring permanently to Bradford City. He then moved the short distance to Huddersfield Town for the 1992-93 season, and after leaving Leeds Road, enjoyed an 'Indian Summer' at Rochdale, where he stayed for six seasons, making over 200 appearances and scoring 41 times. Whilst at Spotland, Stuart had a brief loan spell at Chesterfield in 1995, but did not feature in the side. After leaving Rochdale in 1999, he moved into non-league football and played for Southport, Stalybridge Celtic and Guiseley.

From John Pickford in Sainghin-en-Melantois, France on 15/11/2019 ...
It was January 14, 1989 and Derek and I were making our almost annual visit to the Goldstone Ground to see Argyle hopefully triumph, but occasionally draw and usually lose to the Seagulls. The Goldstone was a proper football ground with its own character and atmosphere. As we drove up over the Downs from the A23 and down past the Greyhound Stadium to the ground it was getting pretty close to kick-off so, not wanting to miss any of the action and perhaps two or three quick goals from Argyle, we got into the ground at the first opportunity. We found ourselves very definitely in the wrong place at the wrong end! A low profile was going to be very much the order of the day - luckily we were wearing nothing green so it was going to be an afternoon for determined and silent self control - hopefully a 0-0 draw would avoid any problem and see us safely away. It was not to be. Argyle played some good stuff on the breakaway and Mark Stuart scored at the end of a lightening break down Argyle's right wing - it was a terrific goal and it gave Argyle the advantage. Derek and I were hard pressed not to react but self preservation outdid elation and we feigned anger at all things green. It got worse with Brighton equalising in front of us with a few minutes to go. It was the nearest I've come to celebrating a goal against the greens. Somehow we got out in one piece! I can still picture Mark's goal and Derek's unemotional response - he always was a very good actor!
