Shipperley played briefly for Argyle whilst on loan from Charlton Athletic in the 1973-74 season. Starting his career at The Valley, the Uxbridge-born central defender made exactly a century of appearances and scored eight goals for the South London side. He was loaned to the Greens in 1974 and played a single game, a defeat away at Halifax in March 1974, so he never graced the Home Park turf. Returning to The Valley, he left the club at the end of that season, but preferred to stay a little closer to home and signed for Gillingham. He established himself at the heart of the Kent side's defence and went on to make 144 appearances and score 11 goals before returning to Charlton in 1978 for a further two-year spell, adding another 53 appearances and 6 goals to his earlier tallies. His last League club was Reading, whom he joined in 1979 to make 19 appearances in a two-year spell. After completing over 300 career League games and scoring 25 goals, he retired and became a Metropolitan Police officer, whilst also managing non-league Brook House. His son, Neil, later became a prolific forward who exceeded his father's games and goal career totals.
