Born in Upton Park, Robson was perhaps destined to play for West Ham, yet it was Exeter City with whom he started his career. A single stellar season for City in 1986-87 brought him plaudits from far and wide. Unable to fight off the predators, City sold him to Tottenham Hotspur, where he remained for five years, making just eight appearances and finding the competition for places amongst superstars, not surprisingly, extremely tough. Whilst at White Hart Lane, Robson was loaned out four times – to Reading in 1988, then in 1989 firstly to Watford and then Argyle. Arriving at Home Park over the Christmas period of 1989, the nippy winger made a productive debut in the 2-2 home draw with West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day, and went on to make seven further appearances but was never on the winning side. Returning to Spurs, he was later loaned out a 4th time, returning to St James Park in 1992.
Robson finally realised his Claret and Blue dream, moving to Upton Park in 1992, where he played in 44 of West Ham's 46 games and scoring 8 in their promotion back to the Premiership. He was then sold for £125,000 to Charlton Athletic in November 1993. In a successful four-year stint at The Valley, he clocked up over a century of appearances, scoring nine times before winding down his career with Notts County – a spell within which he was also loaned to Wycombe Wanderers – before retiring in 1999.
Robson remained active in football, coaching in various roles at Charlton for eight years and gaining a UEFA Pro Licence. In 2008 he move to Gillingham as first team coach and briefly as assistant manager, and two years later took up a post as first team coach under Darren Ferguson at Peterborough. In June 2012 he was appointed head coach at Barnet - replacing Martin Allen - having quit his post at London Road to take the reins at Underhill.
