AIDEN MAHER
Born: 01 December 1946
Came from: Everton Went to: Tranmere Rovers
First game: 19 October 1968 Last game: 28 November 1970
Appearances: 70 (69/1) Goals: 3
Born in Liverpool and a winger, or an outside-left as it would have been at the time, he regularly starred in reserve team football and signed professional terms at Goodison Park, aged 18, but made just one first team appearance, against Manchester City in 1967.
An England Schoolboy international, he had also won the 1965 FA Youth Cup with Everton, beating Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate.
Moving to Home Park in October 1968, aged 21, as a Billy Bingham signing, he was a regular on the left-wing during his first two seasons at Home Park. However, after losing his place to Don Hutchins, he was sold to Tranmere Rovers, where he played just seven times and scored once, before finishing his career with Bath City.
Returning to the south west with the Romans in July 1972, he spent a season-and-a-half with the cub making 58 appearances and scoring three goals for what was to be his last club.
He remained living in Plymouth and ran the The Queens Dock pub on Keats Street, Keyham, near the Dockyard, with his wife, in the 1980s. He had also made headlines in 1977 when he helped rescue a baby girl whose pram accidentally rolled down the ramp of the Torpoint Ferry and landed in the Tamar upside down. Maher, two other men and PC Brian Weeks jumped into the water to rescue the girl and the PC performed CPR to bring her back to life. In 2014, he was reunited with Leanne Goddard, the baby he helped rescue, who, at the time was the manageress of the Oceana nightclub in Plymouth. Both were match-day guests at Argyle, a reunion that must have been very emotional for them after nearly four decades.
In his later years he retired further up the south coast, and moved to Portsmouth but remains a regular guest of Forever Green, the former players' association at Home Park.
