The Pontypridd-born defender played for two months in green whilst on loan from Manchester United at the start of the 1974-75 season. Having progressed through the youth ranks at Old Trafford, Griffiths signed professional terms in 1973 and was at the club as a full-time professional for a further two years, in which he made seven first-team appearances, playing alongside George Best, as well as being loaned to Argyle.
Soon after returning to his parent club, he left Old Trafford in 1975, spending two years at Tranmere Rovers, which also included two loan spells across the Atlantic with Chicago Sting. In total, he made 59 appearances without scoring for the Prenton Park side and a further 44 appearances with two goals for the Sting in the NASL (North American Soccer League) across those two spells, in 1975 & 1976.
Perhaps smitten by life Stateside, on leaving Prenton Park, he made the move to America permanent and embarked on a lengthy career of over 300 games, spanning further time in the NASL in addition to the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). His NASL / NASL Indoor clubs included three further seasons with Chicago Sting (1977, 1978 & 1979), Tulsa Roughnecks Indoor (1979-80) and Tulsa Roughnecks (1980). He then switched permanently to the MISL with Chicago Horizons (1980-81) ahead of four seasons with the Kansas City Comets (1981-82 through to 1984-85), where he was captain of the side.
By his last season with the Comets, 'Ironman', as he had become known, had battled back from chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, and had also become an American citizen. Griffiths gave time to the Special Olympics and became a public speaker for the American Cancer Society, as well as finding the time to earn a private pilot's license. He had also been invited to the White House in 1988 for the ACS Courage Awards presentations with President Reagan.
Having settled in Kansas, he sadly passed away aged 67 in April 2022 in Miami, Florida, with his funeral service held back in Kansas.
