Saltash-born Dickson progressed through the Argyle School of Excellence to the fringes of the first team squad. A left-back or left-sided midfielder, he only played a handful of games for Argyle, largely due to a series of injuries. He spent periods on loan at Torquay United and Brentford before moving to the latter on a permanent basis in 2008.
After over 100 appearances at the Bees, Dickson joined Southampton, scoring a first goal for his new employers at relegation-bound Argyle in 2011. He struggled to establish himself during his time with the Saints, punctuated by loan spells at Yeovil Town, Leyton Orient and Bradford City. He had a trial at Argyle after release by the Premier League side in June 2013, before joining League One club Colchester United on a one-year deal. On the back of regular football at the 'U’s, Dickson impressed fellow League One side Crawley Town, who handed him a two-year deal in June 2014.
At the end of the 2014-15 season, having played 32 times for the West Sussex side, he handed in a transfer request as he was keen to return closer to his home in Derriford, Plymouth. At the start of that July, Dickson linked back up with former Argyle manager Paul Sturrock by re-joining Yeovil Town on a two-year contract for a nominal fee.
In his first season back at Huish Park, Dickson was made team captain and appeared in 42 matches, scoring winning goals against Accrington and Mansfield as the club finished 19th in League Two. In May 2016 he signed a new contract for a further two years.
