Born in Aberdare and primarily a winger, Davies played his early football in the nearby Cynon Valley mining village of Aberaman in the wider Rhondda Valley area of south Wales. He was one of several players who moved to Home Park from Aberaman (and escaped a probable life down the pits) at a time when the Welsh club was regarded as something of a nursery club for Argyle.
Davies had been spotted playing for Aberaman by Argyle manager Jimmy Rae and joined Argyle as an eighteen-year-old in April 1949. At that time, it was difficult for a youngster to break into a very strong first team. However, his outstanding performances in the reserves over time, as he developed, helped him to convince Rae that he could fill the vacant outside right position when the former winger Gordon Astall left the club for Birmingham in October 1953. Prior to this, Alex Govan had also left for Birmingham in June 1953, effectively leaving both wing spots vacant for Davies to compete for.
A speedy player with a slim build, he spent eight years with the club, during which he initially featured fairly regularly on the wing for the second string. After waiting until 1953 for his debut, he went on to make 85 league appearances for Argyle over the next five seasons, scoring 15 goals but providing many more goals from both wings. After leaving Plymouth, he had a short spell with Weymouth before returning to his native Wales to play for Llanelli Town.
Davies passed away in his native Wales in July 2012, aged 81.
