Following the Second World War, Plymouth Argyle resumed conventional League football in the 1945-46 season, albeit in the unconventional form of the Football League South. However, the club's senior players took part in a cup competition, the Football League West Cup, in the final two months of the 1944-45 campaign. There is more in Greens on Screen's History, chapter 16, about Argyle's post-war re-establishment and first senior competition, here.
Argyle took part in nine games in this competition, but further facts are very hard to find, except for those revealed in short match reports in the Western Morning News. Warhurst was one of 12 known players whose only appearance for the club was in a Football League West Cup match.
Born in Sheffield in 1916, Warhurst began his career with Sheffield United in 1936 but never made the first team. He then spent the 1937-38 season with Bath City before joining Bristol Rovers, where he played four times in Division Three (South). Unable to win a place in the Pirates' side in the 1938-39 season, the 23-year-old centre-half moved to Home Park on a free transfer in July 1939, in time to appear in the team photo for the season ahead, only for the Second World War to bring an end to conventional football two months later. As the war neared its conclusion, Warhurst made his solitary appearance for Argyle in a Football League West Cup match in March 1945, before moving to Newport County later that year.
