Following the Second World War, Plymouth Argyle resumed conventional League football in the 1945-46 season, albeit in the unconventional form of the Football League South. However, the club's senior players took part in a cup competition, the Football League West Cup, in the final two months of the 1944-45 campaign. There is more in Greens on Screen's History, chapter 16, about Argyle's post-war re-establishment and first senior competition, here.
Argyle took part in nine games in this competition, but further facts are very hard to find, except for those revealed in short match reports in the Western Morning News. Roberts was one of 12 known players whose only appearance for the club was in a Football League West Cup match.
Born in Maerdy in south Wales, Roberts signed for Argyle on professional trial forms in January 1938 at the age of 18, having impressed when playing for Ynyshire Albions in the Pontypridd District League. He played frequently for Argyle's Reserves and 'A' team over the following 18 months before crossing the Irish Sea to sign for Newry Town in July 1939. He then had a short spell with Aberaman, just three miles from his place of birth, before serving as a PT Instructor in the RAF during the Second World War.
Known as 'Tiger', Roberts' only first-team appearance for Argyle, presumably as a guest, came in April 1945 at Swansea Town, and six months later he signed for the Glamorgan club. After 24 League appearances for the Swans, he joined Newport County in August 1948. He later worked at Maerdy Colliery and also acted as a scout for Argyle in south Wales.
Owen Roberts died in Swansea in June 2001, aged 82.
