With Argyle's poor start to life back in League One in 2025-26, following relegation from the Championship the season before, midfielder McCabe arrived as a late loan signing on the last day of the summer transfer window, at the start of September 2025 on the same day as Owen Dale, becoming Argyle's third loan signing of the season.
Born in Middlesbrough, he joined the youth academy of his hometown club as an under 9 and worked his way up through their youth levels. He signed his first professional contract in February 2023, making his debut as a late substitute in a 4-0 EFL Championship win over Preston North End in November 2023. The following month, he extended his contract until 2027.
McCabe had also been a youth international for England, having been called up to the England under-18s for the 2023 Tournoi de Limoges, winning four caps without scoring.
On 1st September, having made six appearances for Boro, McCabe arrived at Home Park on a season long loan at a time when Argyle were crippled by both injuries and a poor start to the season. There had been intimations of signing a more experienced player and it was indeed reported that manager Tom Cleverley had been exploring more experienced options in central midfield, but changed his mind because of how highly he rated McCabe, with the player also extremely highly-rated at the Riverside.
There was a delay in him immediately joining his new team mates and he would miss a potential debut in the home match against Stockport County in early September on account of his first call up to the England under-20s squad who had a game against Italy at Chesterfield on the Friday night before. McCabe however, did watch the 4-2 win over Stockport from the stands.
In signing on at Home Park, McCabe became Argyle's 14th summer signing.
