PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

THANKS FOR THE MEMORY

SEASON 1958-59 RE-VISITED

By Steve Rhodes

Thanks For The Memory is new and different book about Argyle. It is as much about people and events as it is about football itself. At the core of the book are the life stories of the men in green and black who 50 years ago took the Third Division by storm. But there is much more to it than that.

Read about the manager Jack Rowley, who before he took the Home Park hot seat was a top, top player at Old Trafford. Then there was Chairman Ron Blindell, a controversial but successful shoe entrepreneur whose money saved Argyle from extinction less than 12 months before the promotion success. With the team at the top of the League and the 20,000 plus gates the Board overthrew the Chairman!

The promotion was nearly de-railed by that bitter Boardroom dispute, which only ended after the intervention of Sir Stanley Rous and the FA – who was right and who was wrong? Thanks For The Memory examines the detail and shows another side to Blindell.

The dual spearhead of Wilf Carter and Jimmy Gauld struck fear into the hearts of every defence in the Division. They are arguably the best front pairing the club has ever had. Carter went on to become the club’s leading post-war goal scorer, Gauld went on to jail! Their stories make interesting reading.

Read about football finance 1950s style – £20 a week players, 10p to stand on the terraces and a Supporters’ Club that turned a loss into a profit.
