Floodlights!

20 Jan 2002

Now I've got a bit of a thing about floodlights. Always have had. If there's one thing that gets me going it's the sight of a floodlight in the far distance. Not just any sort mind, it's got to be the footie variety. The trouble with these modern stadia is the demise of the pylon, but at least our new lights are a sort of half-way house. And I have to say they look very impressive; shades of the old Wembley design in a way.

So that's my floodlight fetish out in the open. The other problem with these modern structures is that they're so enclosed that there's just no way you can get a look in from the outside. Having travelled to many grounds around the country, usually not on a Saturday, I love to be able to get a glimpse though whatever gaps there may be. But with phase 2 complete, Home Park threatened to be completely sealed. So as you can see in one of the pictures below, it's a real pleasure to see see-though gates at the emergency entrance.

Taken this weekend, the photos show the weather over the two days couldn't have been more of a contrast. Glorious sunshine yesterday for the first set: the Barn Park End from Central Park and, inside the stadium, all floodlights now in place and just one corner is yet to be seated. Today it was wind, rain and very gloomy: perfect for the first floodlight test.

Thanks to the Club for giving access to Home Park, and Barr for their cooperation.
