One Year On

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

29 Dec 2002

A winter's day, in a deep and dark December; and as you'll see, a December day that changed by the minute, from rain-laden skies to bright sunshine. It's been a while since I've added a new stadium page, so how's Home Park looking now? We all know that the interior is excellent, and there are plenty of pictures on the match pages to show that, but what about the exterior? It's been a whole year since the two ends opened their doors for the first time, so how has the stadium blended into its surroundings?  Quite simply, the answer is extremely well, although that's not necessarily a compliment. The good news is the the Barn Park and Lyndhurst views are ones to be proud of. Unfortunately the Devonport End also seems to blend well with it's surroundings: the shabby and neglected Council-owned car park.

So I'm going to show this under three headings: The Good, nothing more to be said; The Bad, elements that really deserve some criticism; and The Ugly, also 'bad', but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt as they should be rectified with phase 2. The trouble is, when will that be?

Is this really the fiercely loyal Greens on Screen daring to criticise? Well yes it is; after 12 months of bottling a few things up, it's time to un-cork. Read on!

The Good

Starting from the Barn Park End, moving down and into reverse, past the old Barn Park entrance, and then forward again, along the Lyndhurst side and up to the Devonport End ... here's how the new parts of Home Park look now. Pretty damn good I'd say.

The Bad

OK, here I go then. I guess I'll be in the minority here, and after all, what does it matter as long as the team's winning? And these really are quite trivial matters compared with what is right about the new stadium. It's just that because they are small matters, surely it would be quite easy (and inexpensive) to put them right. For instance, I'm no brickie, but it looks so cheap to see the 3-hole perforated bricks used at the ends of the walls either side of the Devonport End steps. This is not how it's supposed to be is it? Or am I wrong? Any brickies out there, please let me know! Then there's the steps themselves (middle picture) - the way that the rails have been set into the steps is incredible! I cannot believe that the club has accepted that as a satisfactory standard of workmanship. Not to mention the general debris, and in the third row, examples of odd pieces of plastic piping and metal bits sticking out of the ground, all of which has remained untouched for a year!  Surely it is not beyond the wit of man to sort this sort of stuff out.

But does it really matter? I say yes. The fact is that the general public sees this sort of thing, however trivial it might be compared with the bigger picture, and it only reinforces a traditional view of the club, one that we are all trying to shake off. Luggy is completely in tune with the importance of quality and high standards on the pitch, but surely that should apply to every nook and cranny within the club. It's a matter of pride, pride in your club, pride in your city.

Rant over. I think I'm getting old!  My daughter says that this is what happens when you have too much time off over Christmas.

The Ugly

To be fair, these should all be resolved once Phase 2 goes ahead, or when the council-planned Central Park improvements are complete, so the unfortunate arrangements in these pictures are quite understandable. But now that further redevelopment has been put on hold, perhaps the Club and City Council will have some difficult decisions to make. How long will they tolerate the unfinished 'joins' and Barr's 'building site'?

Row 1: the ugly arrangement above Pilgrims Way, and the patchwork road surface at the Devonport End, somehow in keeping with the unsightly car-park behind. It's such a pity that this is the first area that visitors see.

Rows 2 & 3: the temporary arrangements at the corners of the Devonport and Barn Park Ends, as they meet the undeveloped Main Stand side, followed by some shots of the deteriorating building site and the mound of excavated soil and general debris.

But I can't leave it like that!

Let me stress again, the inside of the stadium is magnificent, and with a big crowd the match-day atmosphere is superb. And so much has worked from the outside perspective. What a miserable git I must be.
