Argyle's floodlights were officially switched on in October 1953 for a friendly against Exeter City. Unfortunately a near gale and pouring rain kept the attendance down to 2000, even though crowds of 12,000 had earlier seen two reserve games under the lights. Old timers will remember the electrical contractors, Madge & Sons. Originally there were 36 bulbs per pylon, but these were replaced with 18 more powerful units a few years ago. Now, 48 years old, just two pylons remain.
