STEVE WOOLDRIDGE
Full Name: Stephen Joseph Wooldridge
Born: 18 July 1950
Came from: Crystal Palace Went to: Crystal Palace
First game: 15 August 1970 Last game: 28 November 1970
Appearances: 22 (22/0) Goals: 0
Born in Chiswick, in west London, Wooldridge came through the youth ranks at Crystal Palace as a full back before signing professionally in 1967.
Having failed to make a first team breakthrough at Selhurst Park, he moved to Argyle. Sources and records had indicated he was a permanent signing, but in actuality, Wooldridge had moved to the club on a season-long loan for the 1970-71 season.
He started his only season at Home Park as first-choice right-back, but was dropped midway through the campaign and replaced by Mike Dowling and was unable to regain his place.
This resulted in Wooldridge admitting to feeling homesick and rather than fight for his place, he preferred to return to Palace and play in the reserves. It was quite a time for the club as the Western Evening Herald article (Dec 21st 1970), which had announced Wooldridge's return to London, also carried a story about Argyle trying to tempt 1966 World Cup winner Nobby Stiles from Manchester United (after he had asked for a transfer), to Home Park, under Ellis Stuttard! What would have been quite a coup was denied when Stiles stated an initial preference to stay in the top-flight, though ended up actually signing for Second Division rivals, Middlesbrough - for whom he played against Argyle, at Home Park, in an FA Cup 3rd round game in January 1973, which Argyle won 1-0, much to Stiles' obvious fury!
Wooldridge himself did indeed continue back with Palace's reserves but was released at the end of the following season. In the summer of 1972, he moved to Colchester United but played only three games for the club, his last being in September 1972. Colchester's manager at the time had been Dick Graham, a former Crystal Palace manager, who would have no doubt been aware of his development as a youth at Palace. Graham had given him his Colchester debut, but resigned shortly afterwards and Wooldridge only played two further games. He was then initially loaned to Folkestone (the Kent side that lasted until 1990 before effectively becoming the modern-day Folkestone Invicta) in November 1972. He then signed permanently a month later after being given a free transfer by Colchester.
After spending the remainder of the 1972-73 season with Folkestone, little is known about his remaining career or whether he stayed within the game.
