The Liverpool born full-back served his apprenticeship at Anfield, signing professional terms in 1969 under Bill Shankly. However, a broken leg hampered Webb's progress and whilst he never got the chance of a first team debut, he did make the bench for several European ties. His League bow finally came when he was loaned to Argyle in September 1973, staying a month and playing four times in green. On returning to Anfield, perhaps realising he was no nearer the first team and with an appetite whetted for League action, he took the oft-travelled path from Anfield to Prenton Park, transferring to Tranmere Rovers for the 1974/75 season, playing 20 times. However that total of 24 appearances proved to be his League career encapsulated.
After a brief spell in Dutch-speaking eastern Belgium with regional amateur side Bilzen, he then moved Stateside, making over 150 appearances in two spells in the North American Soccer League (NASL) for three clubs. He first lined up for Chicago Sting for 3 seasons, during which he lined up in defence with former Pilgrim Clive Griffiths, who had a loan spell with Argyle the season after his team-mate. He then returned to Europe to spend three seasons with MVV Maastricht in Holland before returning to the States at the start of the 1980s to spend several seasons alternating between Edmonton Drillers and Edmonton Drillers Indoor.
Leaving the NASL at the end of the 1982 season, he then returned to eastern Belgium to see out his career back in Bilzen, but this time with 3e Klasse B side K. Bilzerse VV. His nomadic career proved life-changing; clearly enamoured by the Dutch lifestyle, after retiring from the game he returned to settle in Maastricht, where he had met his wife whilst playing for MVV.
