Tilley joined Argyle from non-league Chippenham Town and, after a slow start, became a fixture in the side at wing-half. He spent seven years with Argyle, providing the cross for many a goal but never getting on the scoresheet himself. After leaving Home Park he played for Swindon Town for two seasons before ending his career at Trowbridge Town.
