REX TILLEY
Full Name: Herbert Rex Tilley
Born: 16 February 1929
Came from: Chippenham Town Went to: Swindon Town
First game: 21 March 1953 Last game: 16 April 1958
Appearances: 129 (129/0) Goals: 0
Tilley was born in Swindon and joined Argyle from non-league Chippenham Town, making his debut in March 1953. After a slow start over his first three seasons he became a fixture in the side at wing-half.
He spent seven years with Argyle, providing the cross for many a goal but never getting on the scoresheet himself. Highly-rated by his fellow professionals, he left Argyle, after over a century of games in green, the season before the 1958-89 Third Division championship win. Johnny Williams was a fan of Tilley's in particular, as, being a player on the opposite flank of the half-back line, was often a recipient of his flame-haired team mate's cross-field passes.
Tilley left to play for his birth-town club, Swindon Town. He spent two seasons at The County Ground from 1958, making 31 appearances, also without scoring, before ending his career back in non-league at Trowbridge Town.
Retiring locally, Tilley passed away in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, in May, 2016 aged 87.
