Teale started his career at Clydebank before joining Ayr United in October 1998. Already a Scottish under-21 international, his form at Ayr led to a move to Wigan Athletic in 2001, with whom he won the Second Division and then promotion to the Premiership. In January 2007 he moved to Derby County for £600,000, but he was unable to hold down a regular place and in February 2008 he joined Argyle on loan until the end of the season. After some impressive performances, Argyle were keen to sign him but could not afford the fee and he returned to Pride Park.
After a month's loan at Barnsley at the start of the new season, Teale finally became a regular member of the Derby first team under new manager Nigel Clough. In total he appeared 104 times for County and scored five goals before leaving for Sheffield Wednesday on a two-year deal in June 2010. By this time he had won his 13 international caps for Scotland, including a substitute appearance in March 2008 whilst at Home Park, together with fellow on-loan Pilgrim, Russell Anderson.
During the 2010-11 season Teale played 51 times and scored five for the Owls before leaving Hillsborough by mutual consent in July 2011. He returned to his homeland to sign a two-year contract with St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League, which was extended by a further year in April 2013, and then converted to a player-coach role at the end of the following season. After the sacking of the incumbent manager, Teale was appointed as St Mirren's caretaker-manager in December 2014, and a month later, after over 100 appearances for the Buddies, he was confirmed as manager at St Mirren Park until the end of the 2014-15 season. In June 2015, Teale left the club by mutual consent.
After leaving St Mirren, Teale was reported to be working towards his SFA coaching licences in preparation for a return to football.
