Stuart started his career with the South Bank amateur club in his hometown of Middlesbrough. He was soon spotted by Boro and spent 17 years at Ayresome Park, playing nearly 250 games either side of the war. Moving to Home Park in 1947, he played regularly at full-back until choosing to retire at the end of that season. He went on to play for non-league Whitby Town.
