Smith joined Argyle from Sheffield Wednesday, for a then record fee of £170,000, in the summer of 1987. He had made over 350 appearances for his hometown club in the previous nine years. The big defender enjoyed an excellent two years at Home Park before moving north to play for Barnsley, after requesting a transfer so that he could return closer to home. After nearly three years at Oakwell he moved on to Notts County but found his chances there limited. After loan spells with Port Vale, Huddersfield Town and Chesterfield he finished his career with a season at Lincoln City, before moving into coaching.
