Flush with cash after the arrival of Dan McCauley as chairman, David Kemp splashed out £185,000 on Bristol City winger David Smith in November 1991 in a bid to inject some pace and trickery into his second-tier strugglers. But Smith suffered nothing but bad luck in his short spell in Devon - sustaining a series of niggling injuries, scoring the fateful opening goal in the clash with Blackburn that saw Argyle relegated, and finding out he was surplus to requirements just weeks after buying a new house in Plymouth. He was sold to Notts County for £150,000 just eight months after becoming a Pilgrim.
