An energetic left-back who also featured in midfield, Morgan joined David Kemp's second-tier Argyle side from Blackpool in the summer of 1990. He had been linked with a £300,000 move to top-flight Wimbledon a year before, but failed to agree terms and eventually joined Argyle for a mere £115,000 – a relatively hefty outlay for The Pilgrims at the time. A well-built, pacy player who had an appetite for charging forward, Morgan was also prone to occasionally drifting through games in a relaxed fashion – and thus he was the type of player who divided opinion among supporters.
The arrival of Peter Shilton as manager in early 1992 saw Morgan slapped on the transfer list, where he remained for what seemed like an interminable amount of time. He managed 36 league appearances in 1992-93, despite seeking a move the entire time, and newspapers linked him with a host of lower division clubs before he surprised everyone by signing for Premier League Coventry City for £110,000. Bobby Gould, who had tried to sign Morgan for Wimbledon three years before, was Coventry's manager at the time, but his resignation just months after signing Morgan was a watershed moment in the left-back's top-flight career. He tore his Achilles tendon the season after, and was out of favour on his return. He joined Wigan Athletic in 1996, before seeing out his career with spells at Bury, Burnley, Hull and Halifax.
