Began his career with St Johnstone and spent four years at the club, including a short loan spell with Cowdenbeath, before being released having made just one appearance. Malcolm had briefly served under Paul Sturrock at St Johnstone, which led to his move to Home Park. During his one season at Argyle he struggled to maintain his fitness and only played a handful of games before being released. He then joined Ross County and went on to play for Drogheda United, Dublin City, Shelbourne and Finn Harps in Ireland and Alloa Athletic, Montrose and Forfar Athletic in Scotland. Malcolm was forced to retire aged just 30 due to a groin injury.
