Beginning his career as an apprentice with Grimsby Town, Leadbitter did not make a first team appearance before moving on to Hereford United. He became a regular in the midfield at Edgar Street over the following two seasons and this led to a transfer to Cambridge United. After a loan spell with then non-league Barnet, he became an integral part of the Cambridge side which twice won promotion over the following five years. After more than 200 appearances for Cambridge, he joined Bournemouth in 1993 and a little less than two years later moved to Home Park for his first spell with Argyle.
Leadbitter was a key member of the side that won promotion in 1995-96 and scored one of the goals that defeated Colchester United and took Argyle to Wembley. After losing his place midway through the next season, he left Home Park and had a brief spell in non-league football with Dorchester Town before signing for Torquay United. Following two productive seasons at Plainmoor, he returned to Argyle and played fairly regularly over the next 18 months before retiring from League football. He then returned to his native north-east with Guisborough Town and went on to play for Whitby Town, Peterlee Newtown, Thornaby and Bishop Auckland before a return to Guisborough.
