King came through the youth ranks at Upton Park but failed to make the grade. The Hillingdon-born midfielder joined Argyle in April 1990 as one of David Kemp's first signings just a month after he took charge. His flowing locks made eight appearances towards the back-end of the 1989-90 season, five of them as starts. With an eye on the following campaign, King was part of the 1990 pre-season visit to Sweden, coming off the bench in the first game of the tour to score twice as Argyle came from behind to beat Tvaaker IF 3-2. He then started the next two games: a 0-0 draw with Trelleborg followed by a 3-1 win against Lund. Finding chances in the 1990-91 season harder to come by, King made a further eight appearances spread between August and April, half of which came from the bench. The Greens managed to stave off relegation, finishing 18th, and King was released at the end of the season having never really done enough to cement a regular place. He opted to return to London and continue his career in non-league football, signing for Hendon.
