He failed to make a first team appearance for Newcastle and a year later moved to Genk in Belgium. He returned to England with Stoke City and spent three successful years there before moving on a free transfer to Bochum.
Unable to win a regular starting place he was loaned to Coventry City and then made the move permanent. He lasted less than a year there, joining Argyle after his release. A bit-part player during his two years at Home Park, he was released at the end of his contract and returned to Iceland with IA Akranes, moving on to KR Reykjavik two years later.
Gudjonsson retired from playing in 2013 and has since managed Fram Reykjavík and KR in his homeland.
