A goalkeeper with local league side Oak Villa, Dyer was signed by Argyle and made his debut as an 18-year-old in 1955, in an attempt to fill the void caused by the retirement of Bill Shortt and Les Major. He was on the small side for a first-team 'keeper and after two years of struggle to establish himself in the team, moved back into non-league football with Ilfracombe Town.
