Dyer made his Crewe Alexandra debut as a 20-year-old in 1933 and went on to make 51 appearances over the next three years, scoring 10 goals. The Crewe-born left-back then moved to Argyle after a fine performance against the club when Crewe visited in a 1937 FA Cup tie. He spent three seasons at Home Park as a fringe player, largely as a back-up for Jimmy Rae, before the Second World War interrupted his career. During the war he continued to play regularly for Army representative sides whilst stationed in Scotland, and on cessation of hostilities, he initially travelled regularly from Aberdeen to claim his place in the Argyle side. It was a worthy sacrifice as he established himself more successfully than before the war, spending a further two seasons with the club and doubling his appearance tally. Retiring at the end of the 1946-47 season he declined an offer to return to hometown Crewe in order to enter business. Dyer's retirement marked the start of Pat Jones' long spell with the club as his replacement.
