Newark-born Cobb was spotted by Nottingham Forest playing for works side Ransome & Marles in his hometown. He spent three years at the City Ground, making infrequent appearances at inside-forward, before following his former manager Andy Beattie to Home Park. He helped Argyle avoid relegation during his first campaign with the club but fell out of favour the following season and was sold to Brentford. He spent two years there, playing regularly, before ending his professional career with a spell at Lincoln City. He also went on to play for Boston United.
