Chapman was a young midfielder, who had joined Argyle as an apprentice after starring for the Plymouth & Devon Schoolboy teams.
Originally born in Cardiff, he moved to the south west with his family at a young age and after being scouted in junior football locally, signed on at Home Park. He had trials for England Schools but given his birthplace, eventually opted for, and was capped by Wales, six times at youth level.
He made his debut for Argyle as an 18-year-old in 1970 and played three times, two of which were starts in three non-successive home matches across January and February, against Rotherham United, Gillingham and Bradford City, which sadly yielded only one draw and two defeats.
Sadly, his youthful promise was never fully realised due to a significant cartilage injury that forced his retirement from the professional game, after just those three first team appearances for the club.
He stayed local following his career and forged a successful second career in local business and hospitality. For many years he co-owned and operated the Boringdon Hall Hotel, the well-known, historic, Grade I listed hotel located on the outskirts of Plymouth and the Astor Hotel, which featured on the TV show "The Hotel Inspector". He successfully built up Boringdon Hall's reputation after a significant fire, as a major regional wedding and function venue before selling the hotel and retiring in early 2011. A later court case involving the separation of affairs from his business partner, made local news.
