DOUGIE ANDERSON
Full Name: Douglas Eric Anderson
Born: 29 August 1963
Came from: Tranmere Rovers Went to: Double Flower (Hong Kong)
First game: 12 September 1987 Last game: 23 April 1988
Appearances: 22 (20/2) Goals: 1
Born in Hong Kong, Anderson began his career as a youth with Port Glasgow Rangers and then Oldham Athletic, but he made just nine appearances for the Lancashire side before moving on to Tranmere Rovers in 1984.
His spell at Prenton Park was the most successful of his career; he scored 15 goals in 126 games for Tranmere before Dave Smith brought him to Home Park for £15,000 in August 1987, where he immediately impressed his new team-mates with his ability on the training pitch.
Smith saw Anderson as a replacement for Gary Nelson, but the winger only managed 22 appearances in the 1987-88 season and found it hard to transfer his training-ground skills to the pitch. However, he did post a notable performance in the 4-0 thrashing of Leicester City at home on December 28th 1987, in which he scored his only goal for the club. The following season he was loaned to Cambridge United (eight appearances, scoring twice) and Northampton Town (five appearances) before he left the UK to play for Double Flower in his native Hong Kong.
Despite many managers lamenting their ability to attract players to the region, Anderson, like so many others, chose to return once his playing days were over, and he settled in the area. Sadly Dougie died suddenly from a heart attack in June 2015 at the age of 51. Argyle were represented at his funeral at Weston Mill by Academy manager and former team-mate Kevin Hodges, as well as other ex-Pilgrims, including Leigh Cooper and Tommy Tynan.
