The Manchester-born left-back arrived at Home Park as Derek Adams' seventh summer signing towards the end of June 2018.
He joined Manchester City's youth academy at the age of five and played in multiple positions as a youngster, including full-back, wing-back and midfielder. He made his under-18 debut at the age of 15, and was later made captain of the under-18 team, leading them to a league title in the 2013–14 season.
Smith-Brown represented England at all age-groups from under-16 to under-20, but found it impossible to make the final leap from City's development squad into their first team. As with many youngsters at the Etihad, he was loaned out to gain experience and had three spells away from Manchester. His first was at Dutch side NAC Breda for the 2016-17 season (who were then playing in the Erstie Divisie - the Dutch second tier). He became a mainstay in the side, playing 30 times in all competitions and helping the team to promotion back to the top flight, via the play-offs.
In 2017-18 he went to Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premiership but the spell was blighted by injury. He played just three times for the Jambos and completed 90 minutes just once. His season-long loan was cut short in January 2018 to allow him to begin a spell on loan in League One (tier 3) with Oxford United. He played nine times whilst at the Kassam Stadium, including United’s 1-0 defeat by Argyle in February 2018.
Smith Brown arrived at Home Park on a two-year contract and became a regular choice at left or right-back in his first season at the club. However, he returned to Greater Manchester for a season-long loan at Oldham Athletic at the beginning of August 2019, but came back early and was released from his contract with Argyle in January 2020.
