Dyson became Derek Adams' fifth signing of the 2018 summer, following his release by Everton. Like Conor Grant, that summer's first recruit, Dyson was born in Fazakerley, a suburb of north Liverpool. He joined Everton at the age of six and worked his way through the age ranges, becoming a near ever-present for the title-winning under-18s in 2013-14, and whilst still only 17, made six appearances for Everton's under-21s that season. His form earned him his first professional contract in 2014.
In 2015-16 Dyson had loan spells in non-league with Stockport County and Chester City, and the following season he played for Everton's under-23s in the EFL (Checkatrade) Trophy. His form drew the attention of League Two side Grimsby Town, where he made his full Football League debut in a loan spell for the second half of the 2016-17 season, culminating in the Young Player of the Year award at Blundell Park.
Having returned to Goodison, another loan spell seemed to be on the cards in 2017-18, this time at Home Park, but the arrangement fell through. However, Derek Adams got his man in June 2018 after Dyson had been released by Everton, following an injury-hit under-23 campaign in his final year of 15 with the Toffees.
Sadly, the 6'1" striker's time at Home Park was not a success. He only managed two appearances, both in the Checkatrade Trophy, and in January 2019 was loaned to Stevenage, where was unable to play because of a persistent ankle injury. The 22-year-old's contract was cancelled by mutual consent in August 2019, and two months later he announced his retirement as a player.
