Born in Toulon, France, Songo'o began his career in the youth team of Spanish La Liga side Deportivo La Coruña, for whom his Cameroonian World Cup goalkeeper father Jacques played from 1996 to 2004. (It was whilst his father was with Toulon in 1991 that Yann was born. And as well as his father Jacques, Yann’s brother Franck was also a professional, playing in the Premier League for Portsmouth between 2005 and 2008 as well as having loan spells at Bournemouth, Preston, Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday.)
After spells in the youth ranks at French side Metz and back in Spain with Real Zaragoza, Yann Songo'o played lower league Spanish football for Sabadell and Pobla de Mafumet before signing for American MLS side Sporting Kansas City in 2012. He was then loaned to third-flight side Orlando City for whom he played 12 times, scoring once, before concluding his Stateside career.
The defender joined Blackburn Rovers on a two-year deal in the summer of 2013 and made his debut in a League Cup tie, his only appearance for the Lancashire side before a loan move to Ross County under Derek Adams for the second half of the 2013-14 Scottish Premier League season. He played 17 times, scoring three goals, in his time at Dingwall as County finished seventh in the Scottish top flight.
Songo'o returned to Ewood Park for the second year of his two-year deal but played only once more for Rovers before being released. After a trial with League One Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 2015, the Cameroon under-20 international was without a club but became a familiar face at Home Park in the second half of the 2015-16 season when he trained with the Pilgrims. The 24-year-old finally signed for Derek Adams for the second time in their careers, becoming the manager's second signing of the summer of 2016.
Songo'o went on to make 92 appearances across two seasons, scoring twice. He became popular with the fans, based on some wholehearted, rock-like displays in both defence and midfield. Out of contract at the end of the 2017-18 season, he was offered a new deal by the club, which he accepted in late June, the same day the players reported back for pre-season training, to extend his stay with the club into the 2018-19 season.
