After Martin Hodge's big money move to Everton, Argyle started the 1979-80 season with 17-year-old Neil Hards as the number one goalkeeper, but Brown was quickly drafted in on loan from Middlesbrough to provide competition between the sticks until reinforcements in the shape of the vastly experienced Geoff Crudgington arrived from Swansea. Born in Hartlepool, Brown started his career with Horden Colliery Welfare before signing for the Ayresome Park side in February 1977. In all he made ten appearances for the Teesside club, within which he played eight times in his loan spell with Argyle.
He then left Ayresome Park permanently to join Oxford United in 1979, before moving back north with Bury. In a three-year spell with the Gigg Lane club, he made almost 150 appearances before moving to Preston North End in 1986, playing a further 74 times. Whilst at Deepdale he was also loaned to Scunthorpe in the 1988-89 season. After Deepdale he joined the then League side Halifax Town, playing a further 38 times for his final League club before being released in 1991. In all, he achieved over 250 appearances in more than a decade in the Football League.
