The Great Escape. Plymouth's morning was cold but dry, with no hint of the drama to come. By the time the gates opened the rain was clearly 'in' for the afternoon, but there was no threat to the game, and when Argyle took the lead in the first 10 minutes, the prospects looked good. A half an hour later, the Pilgrims' fragile defence (without the injured Kari Arnason and David Gray) had been torn to shreds by the strong, direct-running Tykes, and not for the first time this season, the boos rang out at the half-time whistle. By this time it was throwing it down, every kick was followed by a spray of water and challenges ended a long way from where they began. It was fast becoming silly, but with Argyle on the end of a thrashing, an abandoned game was too much to hope for. So the home fan's brief disbelief and then delight when the referee pointed to the tunnel was matched by Barnsley's outrage. To be fair, the ball was not running and challenges were getting dangerous, but it was a pity it didn't last another ten minutes because the deluge that followed the final whistle was spectacular, and the resulting action would have been farcical (and highly entertaining). So none of it counts, Argyle's luck was in for once, but Barnsley will return with revenge in mind. |
