A Plymouth-born local league player who joined Argyle from Plymouth United, Smith made a few appearances at full-back during four years at Argyle. He then spent six years at Torquay United, playing over 160 games for the club. His brother, Bill, played for Argyle during the 1945-46 Football League South campaign.
